What do you see in this picture? It is a depiction of the virgin and at first the overall portrait as a whole stands out, doesn?t it? This is how our brains decipher the image, as a whole, using the light features and hair of the virgin and contrasting them with the shadowy background.
Then we begin to see the detail in the face, neck and top of dress. There are numerous figures entwined here, with one of them, a winged figure, reaching up across the virgin?s face and holding a curved object that forms the virgin?s nose and eyebrow.
