This is an effective portrayal of the Virgin Mary. At first glance it appears as a portrait, with the dark hair framing the face in a striking way. This is what our eyes are drawn to first. The next thing we notice is what appears to be a cloak over the head. We can then see that the cloak is made of angels, their wings fanning out behind them. The face itself becomes a tapestry of figures on the left cheek and the eyelids also become faces. The figures are holding up a light that casts down over the face.
