This eerie image was taken in 1976 by NASA?s Viking I spacecraft when it orbited Mars. The likeness is of an Egyptian Pharaoh, rising up out of the planet?s surface. We are immediately drawn to the dark shadows that seem to form eyes, the ridge of a nose and lips. One side of the projection is in shadow. Whilst some believe this is evidence of life on Mars, the image is of natural rock formations that are similar to ones found in Idaho, U.S. The shadows created, however, are quite astonishing and the face has become part of pop culture.
